Start a few weeks out. Tell your users, newsletter and communities the date, and link them to your launch page on the day. Product Hunt's own advice is to spread the word and bring people into the discussion, so ask them to try it and comment.
Go live at 12:01 AM Pacific and reply to every comment while the day is young. The launch guide walks through the timeline, and the upvote calculator shows how many upvotes Product of the Day and the top 5 took on each day of the week.
