Product Hunt Launches with Four Topics Place Worse
Inside AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity, posts with four or more Product Hunt topics reach the daily top 5 less often than posts with exactly three.
Most featured launches in this extract list exactly three public topics. Posts that list four place worse. On 10,012 featured posts, three topics reach the daily top 5 at 33.7%. Four topics reach it at 22.7%.
That is not "fewer topics win." One topic and two topics sit next to the three-topic rate (35.4% and 32.2%). The step down is at four. Five or more topics are 59 posts, too few to carry the claim, and their top-5 rate is 8.5%.
Three topics versus four or more
Topic count is the number of public topics on the Product Hunt post. It is not the count of crawler topics that happened to return the row. Top 5 means daily rank 1 through 5. The comparison that has weight is exactly three topics versus four or more, inside the three largest categories. Marketing is in the table because it does not follow the same drop, and because that cell is small.
| Category | 3 topics | Top 5 | Median votes | 4 or more | Top 5 | Median votes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI | 1,422 | 35.0% | 169 | 228 | 20.6% | 129 |
| Developer Tools | 1,244 | 34.1% | 159 | 471 | 22.1% | 124 |
| Productivity | 2,638 | 31.3% | 140 | 406 | 19.0% | 112 |
| Marketing | 589 | 40.9% | 185 | 39 | 41.0% | 150 |
How many topics launches actually list
Three topics are 7,646 of the 10,012 posts. Four are 1,262. The one-topic and two-topic rows are the reason to avoid a "strip the list down" reading: their top-5 rates are 35.4% and 32.2%, in line with three topics, not above them by a wide margin.
Topic count versus vote count on the full table correlates at -0.064. A smooth "each extra topic costs votes" line does not fit. The result is the step from three topics to four.
| Public topics | Posts | Daily top 5 | Median votes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 175 | 35.4% | 160 |
| 2 | 870 | 32.2% | 153 |
| 3 | 7,646 | 33.7% | 155 |
| 4 | 1,262 | 22.7% | 123 |
| 5 or more | 59 | 8.5% | 81 |
The drop is still there after maker count
A larger team already places better, so a topic effect could have been team size in disguise. Pooled across categories, it is not only that. Posts with exactly one maker: three topics reach the top 5 at 18.4% (3,343 posts) and four or more at 14.3% (784 posts). Teams of four or more makers: 56.1% (1,747 posts) versus 41.0% (183 posts).
That maker check is pooled. It was not repeated inside AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity separately. The category table above is the result to cite. The maker split says the four-topic drop still points the same way for one maker and for a team of four or more.
What to do with the topic list
List the topics that name the product. Three is the shape of most of this extract, and four or more lines up with a lower top-5 rate in AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity. Adding a fourth topic to look broader is the pattern that places worse in those three categories.
Deleting a topic to chase the three-topic rate is not a result here. These are launches that already had their topic lists. Nothing in the table follows a maker who removed a topic and then ranked higher. Marketing, with 39 posts at four or more topics, does not show the drop at all (41.0% versus 40.9%).
The other cuts from this same 10,012-post extract are comments per vote by daily rank and solo Marketing versus Productivity.
- Treat three public topics as the common shape, not as a target to game.
- A fourth topic is the step that lines up with a lower top-5 rate in AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity.
- One or two topics do not beat three by enough to justify stripping the list.
- Leave Marketing out of the headline. Its four-or-more cell is 39 posts, and the rate does not fall.
Sample and limits
10,012 featured posts, 1 Sep 2024 through 23 Sep 2026, returned under at least one of six crawler topics: artificial intelligence, developer tools, productivity, design tools, marketing, and SaaS. Public topic count can be higher than that list, because a post can carry topics outside the six.
Four or more topics go with a lower daily top-5 rate inside AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity in this extract. That is not evidence that removing a topic causes a better rank. The data does not separate topic count from product quality, maker network, or the order Product Hunt returns topics.
Frequently asked questions
In this extract of 10,012 featured posts (1 Sep 2024 through 23 Sep 2026), 7,646 list exactly three public topics. Those posts reach the daily top 5 at 33.7%, with a median of 155 votes.
Inside AI, Developer Tools, and Productivity, yes, in this extract. Four or more topics reach the daily top 5 at 20.6% in AI (228 posts), 22.1% in Developer Tools (471), and 19.0% in Productivity (406), against 35.0%, 34.1%, and 31.3% for exactly three topics. Marketing does not drop, and that cell is 39 posts.
This study does not show that. It compares launches that already listed three topics with launches that already listed four or more. It does not follow anyone who edited their topic list. One and two topics also do not beat three.
A pooled check says the same direction remains after maker count. One listed maker: 18.4% daily top 5 with three topics (3,343 posts) versus 14.3% with four or more (784). Teams of four or more makers: 56.1% (1,747 posts) versus 41.0% (183). That check was not repeated inside each category.
