Solo Marketing vs Solo Productivity on Product Hunt
One-maker Marketing launches hit the Product Hunt daily top 5 at 31.7%. One-maker Productivity launches hit it at 15.9%. Teams of four or more do not.
If you launch alone, the Product Hunt category on the post lines up with very different odds. One-maker Marketing launches in this extract reached the daily top 5 at 31.7%. One-maker Productivity launches reached it at 15.9%. That is about twice as often, on 278 Marketing posts and 1,879 Productivity posts.
The gap closes once the maker list is long. Teams of four or more hit the top 5 at 60.0% in Marketing and 59.3% in Productivity. A pooled "Marketing wins" headline would mix that with the team-size effect we already published. This cut holds the maker count still and then compares categories.
One maker versus a team of four or more
Top 5 means daily rank 1 through 5. Solo means exactly one listed maker. The 593 posts with zero listed makers are excluded here. They are not solo launches: their top-5 rate is 25.8% and their median is 143 votes, against 18.1% and 119 votes for the 4,608 posts with exactly one maker. Category is the first topic name we could map, in the order Product Hunt returned the topics. It is not an official Product Hunt category assignment.
| Category | Solo posts | Solo top 5 | Solo median votes | Teams of 4+ | Team top 5 | Team median votes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing | 278 | 31.7% | 145 | 130 | 60.0% | 314 |
| AI | 713 | 20.2% | 130 | 461 | 53.4% | 273 |
| Design | 436 | 20.0% | 126 | 175 | 53.1% | 253 |
| Developer Tools | 796 | 16.8% | 114 | 465 | 48.0% | 234 |
| Productivity | 1,879 | 15.9% | 114 | 570 | 59.3% | 290 |
| SaaS | 283 | 14.8% | 115 | 169 | 53.8% | 290 |
The category gap is a one-maker result
Marketing solos are the high end among these large categories. Productivity solos are the large low end. AI and Design solos sit in between, at 20.2% and 20.0%. SaaS solos are the low end of this list, at 14.8% on 283 posts.
Teams of four or more do not repeat the Marketing versus Productivity gap. Those two team rates are 60.0% and 59.3%. Developer Tools teams are lower, at 48.0% on 465 posts. A large team does not look the same in every category. The Marketing versus Productivity gap shows up for one maker and disappears for teams of four or more.
The pooled team-size table (solo top 5 at 13.8% versus 54.6% for teams of four or more, on a May to July 2026 cut of 979 launches) stays in the 979-launch analysis. Do not mix that window with these 10,012 rows.
What a solo founder should take from this
If you are the only maker on a Productivity launch, this extract says the daily top 5 is a harder room than it is for a one-maker Marketing launch: 15.9% versus 31.7%, with median votes of 114 versus 145. A team of four or more in either category lands near 60%. The practical reading is about support you assemble, not about renaming the product.
Relabeling a productivity tool as Marketing is not a result in this data. We did not test what happens if a maker edits the topic list. Category here follows the first mapped topic, and many posts carry several topics. Changing a label to chase the 31.7% rate would be guessing.
What the team column does support: one maker does not get three other networks for free. Founders who launch alone and still want the shape of a larger team build that list before launch day. A verified launch network is one way to do it. The other cuts from this extract are comments per vote by daily rank and four topics versus three.
- Read your category next to your maker count. The solo gap is the finding. The team rates are the control.
- Productivity solos are the biggest cell in the table (1,879 posts), so the 15.9% rate is not a small-sample fluke.
- Marketing solos are 278 posts. Large enough to report, smaller than Productivity, and still the high end.
- Leave Sales out of the headline. It is a thin slice that only appears when a tracked topic also matched.
Sample and limits
Same extract as the comments-per-vote post: 10,012 featured posts, 1 Sep 2024 through 23 Sep 2026, six topics. Solo rows are makers_count = 1. Team rows are makers_count of 4 or more. Median votes are headline totals stored at last sync.
This does not show that Marketing products win on Product Hunt. It shows that, among posts with exactly one listed maker, the first mapped topic lines up with a higher top-5 rate for Marketing than for Productivity, and that teams of four or more in those two categories do not show the same split.
Frequently asked questions
In this extract, one-maker Marketing posts reached the daily top 5 at 31.7% (278 posts, median 145 votes). One-maker Productivity posts reached it at 15.9% (1,879 posts, median 114 votes). That is a correlate, not proof that the category caused the rank.
No. Teams of four or more reached the daily top 5 at 60.0% in Marketing (130 posts) and 59.3% in Productivity (570 posts). Developer Tools teams of four or more were lower, at 48.0% (465 posts).
Exactly one listed maker. Posts with zero listed makers (593 posts, 25.8% top 5, median 143 votes) are excluded. They placed better than the 4,608 one-maker posts (18.1% top 5, median 119 votes), so a missing maker list is not the same as a solo maker.
Category is the first topic name we could map, in the order the topics came back. It is not an official Product Hunt category field. The sample is featured posts in six tracked topics from 1 Sep 2024 through 23 Sep 2026.
